Stefano Nativi

BIG DATA LEAD SCIENTIST European Commission DG JRC

Stefano Nativi is the Big Data Lead Scientist of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. He coordinates the JRC AI & BD Community of Practice and also is the JRC contact point with the ISO JTC1 – Information Technology. Stefano is co-editor of the ‘AI section” of the “Remote Sensing” journal (MDPI) and associate editor of the “Big Earth Data” journal (T&F) as well.

For more than 10 years, he has served as Head of Unit for the National Research Council of Italy, coordinating several international research activities (funded by EC, ESA, and US NSF) on Data Science and Digital Technology applications. Stefano funded and chaired the Earth and Space Sciences Informatics (ESSI) Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). He is member of the Council of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and co-chair of the GEOSS Development Task Team (GIDTT) of Group on Earth Observation (GEO).

Stefano has been a professor at the University of Padua, University of Florence, and Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. Moreover, he has been a visitor scholar at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, Boulder CO (USA).

Interesting fact

Stefano has received several awards – the EGU Ian McHarg medal (2019), the Geospatial Innovation Award of the Geospatial World Forum (2014), and the Meritorious Service Medal of the IEEE Committee on Earth Observation (2009).
